Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey continues to thrive at the box office. While I had a lot of problems with the film’s flabby storytelling, there was one thing about the movie that was perfect: Martin Freeman as Bilbo. Freeman can rarely do wrong — he’s an amiable everyman whether he’s a hobbit, a sidekick, or a self-deprecating office drone.
Enter The Office: An Unexpected Journey by Eager Beaver Productions. This mash-up brings together the comic drudgery of The Hobbit and the fast-paced adventure of The Office. I’d love to hear the dwarves sing “Free Love Freeway,” David Brent’s rubbish song about Princess Di, or “More to Lose,” a 1983 song by Ricky Gervais’s real-life ’80s New Wave band Seona Dancing. (Song included after the cut. It was a big hit in The Philippines in 1985.)
Since Benedict Cumberbatch will be voicing Smaug and the necromancer in the next two Hobbit movies, I expect a Sherlock mash-up next year with the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
