Flixist Awards 2010: Best Original Screenplay

Here at Flixist, we like writing. We do it all the time, and when we’re not actively writing, we’re appreciating the writing of other people, especially those fantastic members of the film industry who spend their lives crafting original screenplays for our enjoyment. For that reason, the award of Best Original Screenplay is pretty special to us — it’s a way to say, “Hey, thanks for being awesome at writing.”

So, when it comes to putting pen to paper and subsequently putting paper to film, what film in 2010 did so with the grace and brilliance needed to deserve such a coveted award from us?

Sure, Duck Tales may have done the idea way earlier, but the concept and writing behind Inception helped to propel it into the winning spot of our Best Original Screenplay voting — and quite handily, I might add. There's good reason, too; it's hard to watch Inception without taking note of the amazing care and attention that went into the screenplay. In fact, when you read the screenplay itself, you begin to realize just what a miracle it is that the film makes sense at all. Dream layers? Spinning reality anchor tops?

Christopher Nolan's writing takes the audience so effortlessly through all of this insanity that one barely stops to realize how, well, insane it all is. That is perhaps the greatest achievement of this screenplay: it is an amazing screenplay that works even better as a movie. My advice? Pick up Inception: The Shooting Script and keep it in your lap while watching Inception. Appreciate.
