If you’ve read my work on this site before, you may have gathered that I love women a real lot. Like, a lot. No, I didn’t set out to become Flixist’s resident boobie-watcher (untrue), but here I am. It’s my lot in life. However, I suppose it could be worse. My lot in life could be Flixist sports movie guy or Flixist Netflix one-star movie reviewer (hmm…that might be awesome…). I love the ladies, and that’s what I’ll be celebrating today and tomorrow!
First up we have Best Supporting Actress! Lots of wonderful women in terrific roles making the lead actors and actresses often more palatable by off-setting whatever unlikeable qualities they have, or even steal the show, or just add another interesting facet or subplot to the film.
I was lucky to have seen all of the films in this category aside from Shame (to my eternal disappointment), and with the (possible) exception of Gonzo’s chicken girlfriend from The Muppets, all the actresses have supported their own way to this nomination. Rooney Mara appears here as well as the Best Actress category for her work as Lisbeth Salander, Melissa McCarthy stole the show in Bridesmaids, Ellen Page’s delightfully psychopathic Boltie from Super further proves she is one of the best young faces in cinema, Emily Mortimer’s beset-upon sister to Paul Rudd’s Idiot Brother was as endearing as she was sexy in that older woman way, and Super 8 saw Elle Fanning play the role of girl-next-door we all know so well from our own childhoods.
Of course, there can only be one winner…
Again, sadly I can’t personally vouch for Ms. Mulligan (in Shame anyway, she was pretty great as the vulnerable love interest in Drive, but I’m sure you’re probably already bored to tears of Flixist’s collective love affair with that film) but she got the most votes so clearly those lucky enough to see Shame feel passionate enough for her to pass over poor Gonzo’s chicken girlfriend.
One of my top priorities is to see Shame as soon as humanly possible. In the meantime, I think I’ll watch all these other films again because damn if they’re not all pretty effing awesome.
