With Memorial Day coming and going in the US and theaters still shuttered by the coronavirus pandemic, one could be forgiven for not feeling in the movie mood. WRONG! Providing an update on the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film, producer Frank Marshall pulled back the curtain (just a little) on one of the original Memorial Day weekend titans.
We had caught wind earlier in the year of Logan and Ford v Ferrari filmmaker James Mangold taking over the directing reins from Steven Spielberg, and Marshall spoke highly of the turnaround. “[Mangold’s] love of the franchise. He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time.” Spielberg remains onboard as a producer.
The pieces seem in place, creatively. As for the actual process though, things would seem to be just starting to gel. “It just started,” Marshall said in reference to the writing of Indy 5. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer David Koepp is handling the script, last we heard before Mangold entered the project. With Disney setting a July 29, 2022 date at the moment, there’s still a ways to go for production. Still, if writing is truly just at its start–perhaps with Mangold resetting much of the existing material–then it seems likely we’d see another delay to allow for the extended cycle this kind of film demands. Not to mention the ever-changing world under the pandemic.
Whenever the globe-trotting archaeologist may land, let’s hope it’s at least a wait that’s worthwhile.
