Despite two relatively high-profile films releasing this past weekend, the box office did not turn out well. Things were so bad, in fact, that the overall gross across the nation this weekend was the worst it has been since 1995. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga may have taken the top spot, but it is the second worst number-one opener since the awful Casper movie three decades ago. Ouch.
Now, weirdly enough, there is some debate over which film took the number one spot. While Furiosa had a three-day gross of $25.6 million to The Garfield Movie’s $24.8 million, the four-day gross shows that everyone’s favorite Monday-hating cat did better. I’m not sure that I care about four-day grosses, but The Garfield Movie turned in $31.9 million over that period.
As for everything else? Well, IF is certainly not going to become a hit. It took $16.1 million this weekend, falling off 52% from last week and generally being already forgotten. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has had enough time in theaters to be a modest success and it added another $13.3 million to its global box office of $294.8 million. Rounding out the top five was The Fall Guy, which managed $5.9 million and is now certifiably a bomb.
I’m not sure what anyone expected from this weekend. While I hoped that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga would do better, I also realize movie theater tickets are becoming too overpriced. In Los Angeles, for example, it can cost you $25 just to see the film at night. At that point, why wouldn’t you simply wait for the home release?
Anyway, here are the top 10 films for the weekend of May 24-26, 2024. All totals listed are domestic:
