We’re finally a few steps closer to getting the Furiosa spin-off movie that has been gestating for many years. In a press release detailing some upcoming projects at Warner Bros., the company announced that the Mad Max prequel story focusing on Charlize Theron’s character will be released in 2023. That’s not exactly soon, but it appears that the movie is finally happening.
Written and directed by series creator George Miller, Furiosa is slated for a June 23, 2023 release date as long as everything goes smoothly. Surprisingly, Charlize Theron will not be reprising her role, with the titular character instead being played by Anya Taylor-Joy. That’s likely because of the film’s status as a prequel. With it being released eight years after Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron will obviously look older than she did before.
As for other cast members, both Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II have been cast in undisclosed roles. Miller will be producing the film alongside Doug Mitchell, who produced not only Fury Road, but Beyond Thunderdome.
Furiosa wasn’t the only project WB got to talking about. While it is likely the most high profile of its announcements today, WB also announced that its musical adaptation of The Color Purple will be hitting theaters on December 20, 2023. Blitz Bazawule is set to direct with Oprah Winfrey producing (she starred in the 1985 film) alongside Steven Spielberg (director of the 85 version), Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.
Last but not least, a Looney Toons live-action film titled Coyote Vs. Acme was revealed with a summer date of July 21, 2023. I honestly have no interest in that, but I guess it’s neat to see a classic getting revived.
