You didn’t read that wrong. Gael Garía Bernal is playing the lead in Zorro Reborn, a post-apocalyptic take on the swashbuckling hero. Collider notes that Zorro will be less of a gallant outlaw and more of a “masked vigilante bent on revenge.”
At this rate, he’ll probably drive a beat-up muscle-car called Toronado, wield a rusty pipe instead of a rapier, and shoot z-shaped bullets into things. He’ll just go by “Z” as well, because a futuristic wasteland is a rocky place where vowels and consonants find no purchase.
Bernal’s filmography will get even more interesting with Zorro Reborn. He first came to many people’s attention with the films Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También, and has continued with high-profile work from acclaimed filmmakers, like The Crime of Father Amaro, Bad Education, The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel, The Science of Sleep, and Blindness. Bernal can be seen later this year in the Will Farrell comedy en Español Casa de Mi Padre and the relationship drama The Loneliest Planet.
