This news will certainly come as a surprise to Beauty and the Beast fans. An exclusive report from THR confirms that we are getting a prequel to the classic story that will focus on Gaston and his reliable sidekick Le Fou. Josh Gad and Luke Evans are reprising their roles from the live-action adaption.
With this being a prequel taking place before the main events of Beauty and the Beast (2017) it could very well be an origin story of how the two met and paired up. Taking the lead on this prequel are Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis. They are creators of the successful fairy tale series Once Upon a Time. It is set to air exclusively on Disney+, although at this time reps have refused to comment.
The short-run musical series will consist of just six episodes. Alan Menken is currently in talks to return to compose music for the new prequel. He is a legend when it comes to music for Disney films.
I have mixed feelings about this, I would rather see a sequel to the main story than a prequel. The two main stars of Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson (Belle) and Dan Stevens (Beast), are not currently attached to the series, yet. Maybe they will make a cameo appearance? Who knows at this point. I will reserve judgment until I see more development on this concept and hope it’s worthwhile.
