Gendy Tartakovsky leaves Popeye film

It’s a Gendy Tartakovsky kind of day evidently. The awesome animation director was all set and very excited to direct Sony’s animated Popeye movie even to the point of putting together a fantastic animation test, but it appears it was not meant to be. The studio has once again left the long-in-development film up in the air.

“Popeye we put up a great screening, everybody really liked that sizzle, we got a positive reaction,” the director tells Moviefone. “I was in love with what we were doing, but I think the studio is going through changes and I don’t know if they want to make the Popeye that I want to make. So they’ve got to make a decision. Right now, I’m off that project and moving on to the other one that we soft-announced, which is Can You Imagine? which is an original idea of my own and a very personal story. It was hard to let Popeye go, but that’s the business.”

Pretty sad news considering Tartakovsky brought fun to the likes of Hotel Transylvania, but at least this means that he can work on something of his own creation in Can You Imagine. The man brought us Power Puff Girls, Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack so him making stuff up on his own is a very, very good thing.
