I hadn’t heard of Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity until very recently but it seems to be getting a lot of positive buzz, as might be expected given how the director’s last film was the widely adored Children Of Men (2006). Not much is known yet about the film, except that it will be contemplative sci-fi set on a damage space station, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. ONLY Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, according to a quote the actor gave USA Today:
It’s a two-hander with only two actors in the whole film. It is a very odd film, really. Two people in space. No monsters. It’s more like 2001 than an action film.
The Cloon also elaborates a little on the plot (“A satellite blows up and space junk causes damage. We go out in space suits, and she [Bullock’s character] and I are tethered together, floating through space.”), which makes it sound a bit like Solaris – Clooney and Soderbergh’s messy remake of Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 film, in turn adapted from a novel by Stanislaw Lem – meets Futurama‘s ‘Godfellas’. There’s more than enough talent for this to be worth looking forward to, so fingers crossed it gets the thematic depths to keep it on the correct side of the brilliance/boredom line.
