Four years later and the new Suicide Squad has a lot to prove following the old Suicide Squad. Confusing names aside, the James Gunn-directed The Suicide Squad brings back the titular team of misfits and outsiders from the DC canon, slaps an explosive bracelet on ’em and puts them to work for the government doing the dirtiest of dirty jobs. Fun!
The new behind-the-scenes featurette from today’s DC FanDome event gives a glimpse at what’s new and what’s changed with Squad‘s squad. Margot Robbie, of course, returns as clown queen of chaos Harley Quinn, as well as Viola Davis’ government string-puller Amanda Waller. There’s a sense of continuity between David Ayer’s 2016 film and Gunn’s 2021 release almost in the way comic book runs are handed over from one writer/artist team to another; old faces and new ones. Some fresh meat for the Squad as includes Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and John Cena’s Peacemaker. There’s also Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and David Dastmalchian as… Polka-Dot Man. There are so many new faces that DC also released a stylish “roll call” trailer for your viewing pleasure (and mental coherence).
Gunn’s Suicide Squad was the source of some light Internet drama amidst the director’s temporary falling-out with Marvel Studios regarding his planned third Guardians of the Galaxy film. Back playing for both comic book giants, it’s Squad‘s turn to bat.Though a vague “2021” release stands in at the end of the videos, expect to see more (like a proper trailer) from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad sooner than later.
