It really should be no surprise, but Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has managed to ice the competition and capture a first-place finish at the box office this weekend. With not much “new” opening this weekend, it was either Ghostbusters would pop or bust… although I guess it technically also busted… screw this lingo.
Anyway, Frozen Empire managed $45.2 million at the domestic box office with an additional $16.4 million internationally. While that’s not great considering the reported budget of $100 million, it does mean the film is in a good spot to make up some leeway in the coming weeks. Still, this is likely not the opening that Sony Pictures was hoping for.
In second place comes Dune: Part Two, which is continuing to truck along. Generating another $17.6 million, the film is well past profitability and is looking at ending its run well in the black. The same goes for Kung Fu Panda 4, which fell from first to third but made an extra $16.7 million this weekend. Everyone loves Po, it seems, though the success is probably down to there being no kids’ films out right now.
In fourth came Immaculate, the new Sydney Sweeney horror flick. Opening to $5.3 million, the film is off to a solid start. The budget is said to be below $10 million, so this indie horror film is likely to make a massive haul in the coming weeks. The same may also wind up true for Arthur the King, this week’s fifth-place spot with $4.3 million. It doesn’t have much to go before breaking even.
