Yesterday we brought you news of the ridiculous delay that GI Joe: Retaliation will be undergoing in order to be converted into 3D. Today, Dwayne Johnson tweeted some details about just how ridiculous the whole thing is. In response to a tweet wondering whether the 3D would be worth it, The Artist Formerly Known as The Rock responded, “It will be. Designing new scenes to enhance 3D.”
I can understand why they’re doing this. If the studio forced their hand to delay the film and the eventual 3D experience didn’t have enough things flying towards the screen, audiences would be even more annoyed. Even so, they shouldn’t be doing it. If the film needs reshoots in order to create a 3D experience, that means the movie shouldn’t be in 3D. It clearly wasn’t made for 3D, and shoe-horning some “depth” in there will only serve to detract from whatever already existed.
All we can hope for now is that the inevitable 2-disc super-collector’s Blu-ray release will have the original 2D cut included.
