Following a series of controversial Tweets and Instagram posts, Lucasfilm and Disney have parted ways with actor Gina Carano (currently known for her role on The Mandalorian) tonight. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this latest incident is the “final straw” for the company as Carano continues to stir the pot with her agitated political views.
A spokesperson for Lucasfilm told the publication, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Carano has also been dropped from her agency, UTA.
Today’s incident came about when she equated being Republican in 2021 with being a Jew during the Holocaust. In the past, she has posted transphobic comments, outed herself as an anti-masker, and even shared false accusations of voter fraud in the previous Presidential election. Honestly, this turn of events is long overdue.
According to sources close to THR, Lucasfilm and Disney were looking for reasons to get rid of Carano. During the December investor’s day presentation when 4,000 Star Wars and Marvel projects were revealed, Carano was allegedly going to get her own spin-off from The Mandalorian. After her Tweets in November, those plans were scrapped and Carano was possibly put on some kind of probation.
Whatever was meant to be, she’s completely blown her last chance now. It’s hard to say if she was directly fired by Lucasfilm, but the company has no intention of bringing her back into the fray. That likely won’t cause any major issues for The Mandalorian, as season two ended with the slate being wiped clean. Carano’s character, Cara Dune, wasn’t too integral to the plot and won’t be missed by many.
