Godzilla reboot gets a rewrite, features realism

0

Seriously guys, what's with all of the realism?

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have recruited Drew Pearce (same guy who's writing Iron Man 3) to rewrite their Godzilla reboot. Apparently it's to "age up" the characters to fit the actors they want...or something. What's more important, however, is director Gareth Edwards's take on the reboot. According to Coventry Telegraph, Edwards stated:

I've always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine 'If this really happened, what would it be like?' I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.

Even though I kind of trust Edwards because Monsters was so awesome, I still have trouble believing that a realistic take on a giant, radioactive, fire breathing lizard dinosaur is a good thing. I'm hoping the realism is just limited to the human characters (and the destruction around them) rather than the monster itself. If I remember correctly, didn't the 90s version of Gojira have a "realistic" approach also? And we all know how that went.

I'm just not liking the new trend that rebooting a property equates to making it "naturalistic" or gritty and dark. What happened to all of the fun guys? I've had my fill with "gritty" monster movies (thanks to Cloverfield) and now I'm ready for some good ole' giant monster brawling action! Where's my King Kong vs. Godzilla reboot? That fight was rigged!
