I wouldn’t call this weekend bad, per se, but it seems as if Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire kept interest away from any new releases. For its second weekend of release, the monster team-up film managed to grab first place with a 60% decline to the tune of $31.7 million. The film has done incredibly well and while we won’t see the same numbers as last week again, WB is likely thrilled with this result.
As for new releases, Dev Patel’s Monkey Man debuted at $10.1 million domestically. Internationally, the film didn’t fare well with just $2.6 million, but off of a $10 million budget, that’s an agreeable start. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire came in third with $9, but the real loser this week was The First Omen. Despite solid reviews, the film debuted in fourth with $8.3 million domestically. It roughly doubled that internationally with $9.1 million, but with a budget of reportedly $30 million, that’s not a good start.
Rounding out the top five was Kung Fu Panda 4 with $7.8 million, finally beating Dune: Part Two again. Both of those films have done well, so I don’t think Universal or WB are concerned with paltry returns this week. There’s only so much you can expect after a film has been out for a month and change.
