2021 was a big year for cinema, with lots of releases spanning different countries, languages, and genres. Out of these films there were the good, the bad, and the most overrated. Flixist voted Adam McKay’s comedy Don’t Look Up as the most overrated film of the year.
Don’t Look Up became one of the biggest films released last year despite its premiere in December. Many critics and audiences reacted harshly to the movie, like the Rolling Stone calling it “a blunt instrument in lieu of a sharp razor.” It’s clear that Don’t Look Up has inspired a lot of opposing opinions on disaster films and where they stand in 2021, but the recent Oscar Award nominations just prove that Don’t Look Up is over hyped. I mean, best editing for a film that had multiple mistakes make it into the final cut?
Regardless of personal views, Don’t Look Up has remained one of the most discussed films of the past year. I believe that the film is so wrapped up in pointing fingers that it misses what could have been a true critique on capitalism in the modern age and how unsustainable our society is. Don’t Look Up, despite being so popular, was one of my least favorite films of 2021 and easily the most overrated movie that I had to force myself to watch.
