It looks like the Greatest American Hero reboot that was being shopped around is moving forward, with ABC ordering the show to pilot. That means they’ll at least be making a pilot, and most likely the beginning of episodes. The new version of the show will focus on Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman. She comes across an alien spacesuit, but sucks at using her new powers, much like the show’s original protagonist, Ralph Hinkley. The guys behind Fresh Off the Boat are making the show.
At this moment in time it might seem like a good idea to try to reboot Greatest American Hero. Superheroes are all the rage right now, and a parody TV show is right in line with something people might turn into. It is not, however. Television seems to be in the grips of reboot mania, and this one might be the dumbest. The original show lasted for three seasons and none of them were any good. The premise holds very little promise all around, and broadcast television seems to have a lot of trouble nailing down superhero comedy.
Fox already tried this in 2015 with Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm, and if those guys can’t get it to work I just don’t see anyone else doing it either.
