All good things must come to an end. After dominating the box office for four weeks straight, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has finally been dethroned. The hotly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took top honors this weekend with a domestic gross of $114 million, coming right in at expectations. Internationally, though, the film smashed estimates and earned $170 million, propelling the total box office to $289.3 million.
Not content to go quietly, Mario managed to break another record by surpassing $500 million at the domestic box office, making it the highest-grossing film at the US box office for 2023. That record may not last the entire year, though I’m not sure that Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will be able to topple Nintendo and Illumination’s juggernaut film.
Elsewhere in the top 10, little has really changed from last week. The same collection of films are still pulling money, with Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret generating another $3.38 million this weekend. The film opened to rave reviews but simply hasn’t picked up a lot of momentum.
The only other notable change this week comes from outside the top 10. Somehow, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania managed to jump to 12th with an additional $808,000 after being in 35th the week prior. If you look at the result on Box Office Mojo, it states that this is a 6,839% increase from the previous week. There must have been some double features with Guardians to cause that kind of jump.
Here is how the top 10 played out (all numbers domestic):
