The other day, word got out that the sequel to Pacific Rim 2 was indefinitely put on hold by Universal. The kaiju love letter from director Guillermo del Toro was a fan favorite and box office smash, so the idea of never seeing a return to the world of The Rift hit pretty hard for some– one would expect it would hit the hardest for del Toro, but he’s not ready to call it quits just yet. In fact, he’s still working on it as we speak.
“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks,” say del Toro in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”
When Pacific Rim 2 was put on hold, the movie was nearing the final stages of pre-production, so if this delay is as temporary as del Toro claims it is, hopefully this sequel won’t go through any production growing pains once it’s back up to speed again.
Fans of del Toro and his works certainly know that for every project that’s made it out with his name on it, there’s been two or three more that got cancelled somewhere along the way. On the nature of his many lost dream projects, del Toro noted, “…if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness… and I would quickly become a millionaire.”
You just gotta love that guy’s spirit.
