I love Guillermo Del Toro. Like, ‘I dig through his garbage’ love. From Cronos to Pan’s Labyrinth, I think the man is a one of a kind film maker with an always unique vision, and apparently Hollywood agrees because at any given time he seems to be working on a dozen different projects. So, it’s always a bit of relief to know a project he’s attached to lives to see another day, in this case being Disney’s Haunted Mansion.
In a lengthy interview with Collider Del Toro makes mention of the film’s progress. “I delivered my last draft five weeks ago. I have a meeting with them in three weeks. I know they like the screenplay. I need to meet with them in three weeks. That’s what I know.” So, slowly but steadily the film seems to moving along. He goes on to say, that while he is currently writing and producing the movie, he believes Disney is holding out for him to direct, to which he responded “I’m in the middle of Pacific Rim and I don’t know what I’m going to do next.” That’s Guillermo Del Toro! Always keeping his options open.
I’m just happy to know the film hasn’t been trashed by Disney. I think a lot of people were dumbfounded when Del Toro announced he was working on a film based on the Haunted Mansion attraction, especially after the Eddie Murphey starring debacle. But I have faith in the man. He isn’t the sort of creator that takes something on unless he believes it’s worth showing to the world, another quality of his I greatly admire. Now if only we could still travel to The Mountains of Madness and bring Frankenstein back from the dead!
