Guillermo Del Toro was approached for Star Wars Episode 7

As the hunt continues for a director who’s willing to take on one of the biggest film franchises the world has ever known, we continue to only receive news of all of those who have turned down the job. From big shots like Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams to smaller but still notable directors like Matthew Vaughn, it seems like no one is willing to lay claim to the throne of George Lucas. Well, it looks like we can add another name to the list.

Guillermo Del Toro, also known as the most jovial director alive today, has revealed that the studio briefly reached out to see if he had any interest in the job. “We got one phone call to my agent saying, ‘Is Guillermo interested?’ And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I’m pursuing stuff that I’m generating already…” He obviously said ‘no thank you’ and went on about his business as usual, but does go on to state how flattered he was to be offered the shot in the first place.

I can’t say that I’m particularly upset that he turned down the job, seeing as he has about a dozen projects already in various stages of development at any given time, but I’ll admit that a Star Wars film helmed by one of the most imaginative directors in Hollywood would have been pretty awesome. I suppose we’ll all just have to check out he’s own take on the sci-fi genre this coming summer and make do with that.
