Following the departure of Stephen Soderbergh, and having never found a lead actor, I sort of imagined that Warner Bros. would let their Man from U.N.C.L.E. adaptation fall by the wayside, as these things often do. After Get Smart failed miserably, I assumed there wasn’t a lot of demand for this sort of movie. Instead, WB has made a deal with Guy Ritchie and Lionel Wigram. The two will be creating a production company with the intent to make the film, and the idea, obviously, will be for Ritchie to direct.
After Guy Ritchie’s fast drop to irrelevance, which will probably be further emphasized by the new Sherlock Holmes movie, I can’t say this is exciting at all. Whatever spark he had as a filmmaker back in the Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch days has basically been snuffed out. I don’t know if he got too used to being famous and a “talent” that he just stopped trying, or if I’ve just gotten wise to the joke, but this man does nothing for me anymore.
