Having already returned to one of his former glories with Alien offshoot Prometheus, due out in June this year, Ridley Scott announced last year that he was also prepping a sequel to his landmark sci-fi noir, Blade Runner. It was categorically stated at the time that the story would be brand new, with neither Harrison Ford or his character Deckard playing a part, but Twitch are now reporting a possible turnaround on that decision.
Since no source is given, the story has to be taken with a grain of salt. If true, it will probably destine the film to the same sequel/spin-off debates that have been so prominent in the Prometheus hype. Personally, I’d rather any Blade Runner sequel be its own entity, if it has to exist at all. The question of whether or not Deckard was a replicant is part of the original’s noir charm and it would be awful were a Ford cameo to end up giving a conclusive, unsatisfactory answer. The Blade Runner-verse has plenty of possibilities for new stories, so there’s no need to fall back on potentially damaging nostalgia.
