Despite Harrison Ford’s recent career revival, few of his projects have been acclaimed by audiences or critics. That could change if rumours are true that he has become the frontrunner to take the role of Colonel Hyrum Graff in the upcoming adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s popular sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, which already has Hugo‘s Asa Butterfield signed and sealed for the title role. Interest in Ford comes after Viggo Mortensen rejected the part following negotiations.
It’s worth noting that producers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Gigi Pritzker and Linda McDonough have reportedly prepared a shortlist of potential actors and talks have yet to start with any of them, so nothing is set in stone. Pessimists might also suggest that Ford could be reticent to return to sci-fi following an indifferent reception to Cowboys & Aliens earlier in the year, although the popularity and literary origins of Ender’s make the project more prestigious. If he is ever to get his career back to anything approaching its previous heights, Ford needs a win with the fans and a well-executed Ender’s could be it.
