Harvey Birdman spin-off Birdgirl coming to Adult Swim

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law may be the best show that Adult Swim has ever put out. It was witty, sharp, and ruined every memory I had of Hannah-Barbera cartoons from my youth. It was nearly perfect. While the one-off special from late last year Harvey Birdman: Attorney General wasn’t that spectacular, there must have been enough of a response to seeing it return because series regular Birdgirl is getting her own spin-off on the late-night network.

Paget Brewster will return in the title role of Birdgirl who has taken over as CEO of Sebben and Sebben, presumably after her father Phil Ken Sebben (Stephen Colbert) became President. The series is said to be a mix of superhero and legal practice so not straying too far from the source material there.

The biggest issue I see is that the episodes will move from 15 minutes to 30. When Metalocalypse did this it exposed how the comedy worked exclusively in the 15-minute episode format, and I worry that Birdgirl will suffer this same fate. The upside is that this is a completely different show so hopefully I’ll be proven wrong.

The series has received a full season order but no timetable has been put forth for release, nor any other casting news outside of Brewster. Doubt they’ll get Colbert back in a major capacity but I would love to see Gary Cole return as Birdman.
