Hasbro in talks for fourth Transformers movie, duh

So, there’s news of a fourth Transformers movie coming about, which has to break some kind of record for the most obvious news of the day. After the third movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon managed to earn over a billion dollars in box office sales, Hasbro thought it might be a good idea to invest in a fourth movie, regardless of how many times it makes Orson Welles turn over in his grave. Hasbro President and CEO Brian Goldner said in a company conference that they are in “active discussions” with Paramount Pictures, director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg about the potential of another Transformers movie. Yeah, we’ll see. I really don’t think an indie movie like Transformers 4 will pull in much of an audience, though. Best leave that to the real money-makers, like Wes Anderson, for example.

Interestingly enough, news of a fourth Transformers movie has been reported previously, with Jason Statham rumored to be sought for a starring role as well as actually steering the franchise toward another full trilogy with a decidedly darker tone. One can only imagine the direction that would have taken the franchise, but I don’t think this latest piece of news debunks that earlier report. I stated once before how the directors of the Crank movies and Gamer would be perfectly suited to the Transformers franchise and I still believe that. Here’s hoping Statham has enough sense to recruit Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor if he’s still charged with taking on the franchise.
