Some franchises just keep on trucking along, so it should make perfect sense that we’re hearing more and more about Fast & Furious 9, the yet-to-be-cleverly-titled (“End of the 9?”) latest entry in the smash-bang action saga. The latest tidbit confirms some key casting, perhaps shedding light on the ninth entry.
Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron entered the series in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, in which everyone’s favorite auto-enthusiast Dominic Torretto (Vin Diesel) is swept up into a life of (cyber) crime by Theron’s hacker character Cipher. Mirren played a minor role as Magdalene Shaw, mother of Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. The returning characters could mean any number of directions the cadre of speedfreaks could be headed, though we know there’s more of the Shaw-clan on the way soon.
Hobbs & Shaw, the spin-off film starring Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs) and Statham, hits theaters in August. Their side shenanigans are also set to involve Idris Elba, who joins the series for the first time.
Meanwhile, Fast & Furious 9’s production is underway, with a release date currently set for May 22, 2020. Series veteran Justin Lin returns to direct, with his most recent feature being Star Trek Beyond from 2016. How Theron and Mirren will factor in remains to be seen, so stay tuned!
