Pulling from the YA bucket, we’re inching closer and closer to Disney’s adaptation of Artemis Fowl, the bestselling series by Eoin Colfer. The new trailer released by Disney further shows the world of ancient secrets and international sleuthing to be expected from the Fowl clan, though whether series fans will be satiated always remains to be seen.
Hailing from a line of dashing criminals and globe-trotting sophisticates, young Artemis Fowl II (Ferdia Shaw) embarks on a quest into the world of fairies and flashing laser-guns to search for this father, the esteemed Artemis Fowl I (Colin Farrell). Visually, I’m starting to get some idea what this series is possibly about… and it looks like a lot.
We’ve got mystical creatures and high-tech longbows, Hagrid look-alike (Josh Gad) and evil, cloaked masterminds. I’d never dismiss a film entirely before seeing it, but one hopes director Kenneth Branagh manages to balance the visual overload of Colfer’s elaborate world. He’s certainly got a track record to afford him some slack though.
Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, and Judi Dench also feature in Artemis Fowl, the last of whom features as an elvish, jasmine-clad warrior of sorts. So there’s that.
Fowl looks to meld story bits of several of Colfer’s books, so whether Disney has a new cinematic franchise on their hands no doubt remains to be seen. With Artemis Fowl opening early in the summer movie season on May 29, we’ll have to wait and see how the cookie crumbles.
