By Hugh Grant has a long and storied career of starring in some excellent (and some not so excellent) romantic comedies. The dude is full of British charm, wit, humor, and was even able to bounce back from a scandal involving picking up hookers. The man is just perfect and everyone knows it. To many, though, they were puzzled that he appeared in Paddington 2, a sequel to a child’s movie that is clearly for babies.
At one of the various awards ceremonies that Grant attended (which he believes to be the Golden Globes), he was introduced as “From the forthcoming Paddington 2” as if it was the most noteworthy thing he had done. While it was likely done to promote his upcoming film, many fans took that as a jab that the actor had fallen from grace somehow. “I was presenting I think at the Golden Globes,” Grant told Vanity Fair, “and they do that thing when you walk out, and they say, ‘From the forthcoming Paddington 2, Hugh Grant.’ And someone showed me Twitter afterward, and it was…people were full of derision. ‘Christ, has it come to that. Poor old Hugh. Paddington 2. Sequel to a kids film.”
Smiling, he then said, “It’s particularly annoying in the case of Paddington 2 because I genuinely believe it may be the best film I’ve ever been in.” He’s not wrong, either. I can’t personally attest to it -I’ve yet to see Paddington-, but the sequel received immense critical acclaim and enjoyed a lucrative box office gross. It went on to win awards and is heralded as one of the best children’s films ever made. Also, it stars Paddington, who is pure, sweet, and amazing.
While I could understanding believing Grant fell from grace by starring in children’s films, it’s not like he starred in a bad one. It’s probably the best movie he’ll ever be a part of, to be completely honest. Everyone should hope to star in a Paddington film one day.
