We’ve certainly waited long enough on this one. After The Wolverine, if that’s what it’s still called, made several false starts, first as star Hugh Jackman pursued other projects and then, painfully, when Darren Aronofsky left the project, the villain has finally been announced. Rather than deflect the questions people had at his San Diego Comic-Con appearance for Real Steel, Hugh Jackman was ready to drop the big news:
“I’m filming Les Miserables in February, but before that I will be filming Wolverine 2 in October. Chris McQuarrie has written a fantastic script and it should turn out really good. I’ll fight the Silver Samurai in it so that should be exciting. Most of the filming will take place in Japan.”
The Silver Samurai, while not part of Frank Miller’s famous miniseries set in Japan, is the half brother of Logan’s love interest in that story. His ability is to project energy into his katana, but it will probably be unnecessary for the film. Being a samurai is impressive enough on its own. With Tadanobu Asano already having played a character in the Marvel Universe this year, and Sunshine‘s Hiroyuki Sanada possibly getting tired of playing a samurai in every other movie he makes, I would expect a fresh face to be added to the cast before too long.
