Antebellum has been something of a mystery since its first announcement, and this latest trailer does nothing to illuminate just what the hell’s supposed to be going on. Honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
In lieu of a plot breakdown, we get hammered with neat images. The creepy girl in a hallway, the smash of the big city against the Civil War-era South, fire, battles, faces cast in pain and shock–there’s a lot here all backed with screeching strings that give off a heavy mood.
This is what trailers ought to be, more a feeling or sensation of the movie than a description of everything you can expect to see happen in it.
Antebellum, as far as we know, sees successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) enter a horrifying reality with a need to unravel its mind-bending mystery before it’s too late. Vague as hell? Yup. But that’s what we got.
If this mysterious-but-moody trailer did get you pumped to step into Antebellum’s reality, you can check it out when it boggles theaters on April 24, 2020.
