I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu trailer shows a bloody grudge match 40 years in the making

I didn't know this was happening

So, there's apparently a sequel to I Spit on Your Grave coming out, and it's somehow not only a sequel to the original (avoiding the ill-advised remake trilogy), but it will also have the same director and star returning for the film. I didn't hear anyone asking for this, but if it can work for Halloween, then it can work for I Spit on Your Grave I guess.

Director Meir Zarchi doesn't appear to have directed a film in over 30 years, so I wasn't expecting much when I watched the trailer, but I came away pleasantly surprised. As soon as I saw the original's Jennifer had a daughter, I figured this would go the path of the original but with the mother and daughter working as a team to unleash bloody vengeance. What we get instead is the family of the long-dead good ol' boys exacting their revenge (odd that they waited this long, but maybe that's explained in the movie proper) on Jennifer and her own daughter. It seems that Jennifer likely dies which then leads the daughter on her own path of destruction. I think this is the best plot they could have gone with, and the movie itself actually looks all right.

The blood is there. The characters look suitably viscous and weird. There's still plenty of that 70's aesthetic clinging to Deja Vu which might not be present had Zarchi been working for the past three decades. I doubt it'll be much of a shocker, but what we have here I dare say is all right.

I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu will hit DVD and Blu-ray on April 23, 2019.
