Did you go to see an IMAX movie this year? I know I saw both Inception and Alice in Wonderland in IMAX this year, so I’m partially responsible for the following story. IMAX announced in a press release that box office grosses for IMAX films reached $546 million in 2010, more than doubling 2009’s record of $271 million. In economic terms, that’s a whole lot of macaroni. Just to clarify, this is the sum total of all of the IMAX-specific box office takes from all of the various IMAX films that were released this year, including the usual science center documentaries(how was there a Hubble 3D IMAX movie, and no one told me??).
IMAX goes on to mention that this is in large part due to the face that nine out of ten of 2010’s highest grossing films were available on IMAX. Next year could very well lead to similar results, as there are pending IMAX versions of Cars 2, Sucker Punch, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Harry Potter 7 Part 2 among many others. Those four films alone stand to rake in some serious IMAX dough.
