With sequels reportedly on the way, Fox has surprisingly opted to shelve a 3D re-release of 1996 alien invasion blockbuster Independence Day, which had been set for release on July 3rd 2013. No word has been given on any reason for the cancellation.
The movie has a bit of a following thanks to stars Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum and the infamous climax in which a Mac proves itself crucially compatible with alien defence systems, but having sat through it a year or so ago, it’s one of those movies considerably better in memory than reality. It has its moments, but is mostly a by-the-numbers big budget invasion affair elevated by a solid cast and handful of memorable images. The sequels seem unnecessary, but perhaps Fox realised that people would be more excited about them if the original was still remembered as being more fun than it actually was.
