Independent Spirit Awards nominations

Yesterday, we brought you news about this year’s Gotham Independent Film Award winners. All the while, the next big indie film recognition machine, The Spirit Awards, were heaping more nominations on the impressive array of material the industry has produced this year. The full list of nominees were announced yesterday in Los Angeles, with the most nods going to Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone, with seven nominations, and Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids are Alright, with five nominations. In addition to its new Best Feature, Director, Screenplay, and Actress nominations, Winter’s Bone was already recognized as Best Film at the Gotham Awards.

The Spirit Awards, organized by the Film Independent organization, are a good early predictor for Oscar season, though big studio contenders are obviously absent, and it seems foreign contenders only qualify in the Best Foreign Film category, where you will find Morocco’s Of Gods and Men and UK’s The King’s Speech. Black Swan‘s gravy train has started with Best Feature, Director, and Actress nods, as it has for Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, which has comparable category nominations, including a Best Actor nod for James Franco. Interestingly, Gotham’s Festival Genius Audience Award was bestowed upon the documentary Waiting
