Sometimes protection kills (!) in this trailer for Marla, a female written/directed/led horror about an IUD gone horribly wrong. IUDs can be painful, and it’s certainly more than a little eerie to have something like that installed into such an intimate place for years, which makes this a unique avenue for a horror film. It’s a cross-section of both how terrifying sex and surgery can be that’s well worth plundering.
It also helps that the film looks super bloody, as Marla (writer/director Lisa van Dam-Bates) realizes that there might be something up with her surgically-implanted birth control, because a dude she slept with is now very much dead. Will there be a grueling scene where she attempts to remove the device herself? I don’t know, but I want to find out. It’s a twist on Teeth with a more medical bent, and we could always use more of that.
You can implant Marla into your TV screens when it hits VOD and DVD on November 5, 2019.
