James Cameron’s New Terminator movie will ignore continuity past T-2

The Terminator franchise has undergone a metamorphosis in recent years. Straying from it’s simple, action roots, the series has shifted focus away from the impossible enemy towards the messiah story of John Connor, and has attempted to rationalize and overexplain the time-travel elements to the story. In short, things ‘aint been going so well.

Today’s news might see the end of that.

In the upcoming Terminator film, which James Cameron will be producing, the timeline from the past three films in the series will be completely disregarded. Without a timeline, this new film takes on the role of totally-not-a-reboot (but still very much a reboot.) Tim Miller (Deadpool) will direct this new installment, and as we reported recently, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenager will return to star.

In an interview with THR, Cameron explained that this new installment would disregard the series timeline past Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

“This is a continuation of the story from Terminator 1 and Terminator 2. And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse. This was really driven more by [Tim] than anybody, surprisingly, because I came in pretty agnostic about where we took it. The only thing I insisted on was that we somehow revamp it and reinvent it for the 21st century.”

Bringing back both Arnold and Hamilton is a nostalgic idea, and having Cameron involved bodes well for this future movie. Hopefully, there’s enough passion behind this tired franchise to revive what has been dead for so long.

The new Terminator fill is set for a July 26, 2019 release.
