My old friend Jimmy Cameron is at it again! In a recent /Film article, the Canadian Wonder recently proclaimed that Avatar 2 and 3 won’t constitute a trilogy. I, um…what? Isn’t the description of a trilogy “three connected storylines”? Apparently this is the kind of thing that isn’t taught in Canadian public schools.
When talking to Fox News (Why?!), Cameron had this to say about the Avatar sequels: “…I’m writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a [three]-film story arc – not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc…”. How pretentious do you have to get to call your trilogy a “character arc”? Seriously, I feel like Terrance Malick is less pretentious than this dude. Look, Jim, we get that you think Avatar is the bee’s knees, but call your series of movies what they are: a trilogy.
Ok, I get that James Cameron has a certain appeal. Having the most financially successful movie of all time, twice now, proves that. But I’m clearly not in his target demographic, which covers damn near everyone on the planet it seems. What do you guys think? Is Jim a visionary, or just plain pretentious?
