It must be a pretty good time to be a James Gunn fan. Not only was he brought back by Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Warner Bros. still has him on lock to write and direct the next Suicide Squad movie. Up until now, most people have been calling this future movie Suicide Squad 2 but not only do we have an official title for it, but we also now know that it will be a reboot of the franchise.
Speaking with Joblo.com, Peter Safran, the producer of Aquaman and Shazam!, said that James Gunn’s movie will reboot the franchise and give him full reigns to tell whatever kind of story he wants to tell. While we didn’t learn much about what Gunn’s script will be like, Safran reiterated that The Suicide Squad will be a fresh start for the franchise and that Gunn will complete work on The Suicide Squad before heading back to Marvel to complete the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
It’s pretty safe to say that whatever Gunn has planned for the reboot, it’s going to involve a majority of the key Suicide Squad members. Harley Quinn will reappear, given how her portrayal by Margot Robbie was the breakout role in the original movie, though it seems unlikely that Will Smith will reprise his role as Deadshot. If we’re going to dive deep into comic lore, Gunn would be a fool to not put King Shark into his reboot. King Shark is literally a giant humanoid shark that eats people. He’s violent as hell and I love every inch of him. I am a bit worried that Gunn may make The Suicide Squad into DC’s version of Guardians of the Galaxy, but I trust that he’ll be able to bring his own brand of charm to make these villains more distinct than Marvel’s lovable space rogues.
The Suicide Squad will be released August 6th, 2021.
