The first poster has gone online for Jason Reitman’s Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron, and though I like the idea behind it, it’s a bit on the small side. The film revolves around an alcoholic writer (Charlize Theron) of young adult novels and decides to return to her small town to pursue her high-school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson) who is already married and with a kid. Apparently, she bumps into another high-school classmate along the way, played by none other than Patton Oswalt. Not only do I get to see a movie with Charlize Theron that I actually want to see, but I get Patton Oswalt’s comedic genius in a Jason Reitman film as well? I must have been someone really charitable in my past life or something.
I have been looking forward to seeing Young Adult for quite a while, since I’m a pretty big fan of Jason Reitman’s work. He first pleased my comedic sensibilities with Thank You For Smoking, which was an incredibly well-written and clever movie. Reitman’s next project, Juno, was a hilarious and cute little movie. Then he gave unto the world Up In The Air, which had that same witty dialogue and a great concept to boot.
Young Adult seems to be conceptually different from Thank You For Smoking and Up In The Air in that it generally lacks a set of ideals held by the protagonist that bleeds over into all aspects of the plot. It seems closer to that of Juno, since it seems mainly character driven and less by an overarching concept, though that’s just judging from the premise itself… The comparison to Juno is appropriate, given the fact that this will be the 2nd time Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody work together, the first time being (drumroll) Juno.
Young Adult will have a limited release December 2nd and a wide release the following weekend.
