If you were somewhere in your teenage years during the late 90s then Kevin Smith’s collection of films was basically your bible. The director certainly captured a moment in time with his independent filmmaking but for a lot of folks that moment sort of past. He’s more of a nerd icon now than a heralded director, and I’d say the real beginning of the end was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, in which he took his funny side characters and turned them into dull slapstick.
Spent the first day of 2019 having a #JayAndSilentBobReboot pre-pre-production meeting at our holiday-roomy @WeWork office! @JayMewes took this pic of me and @JordanMonsanto to both mark the moment and to document that we were the only dopes in Hollywood working on the holiday. pic.twitter.com/xTNrpN6OF6

Now he’s going to do it again with Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Smith, along with Jay actor Jay Mewes and producer Jordan Monsanto, are in pre-production on the film according to Smith’s Twitter. While Smith announced that they’d be filming the movie previously that’s hardly a confirmation for a director whose movies often never see the light of day, especially sequels. Now we know this will actually happen. Whether that’s a good thing or not is up to your personal preference but I’m finding it hard to get excited about a reboot to some characters that kind of lost their shine more than a decade ago.
We’ve got details on the plot from Smith’s announcement, but making the same movie with a sequel twist doesn’t sound that clever. I suppose they’ll have to shake some things up. After all, Smith has lost a ton of weight so the fat jokes are out the window.
