Disney, owner of everything, has just announced the streaming service it essentially bought Fox to create–and it will include everything ever. The amount of content Disney will have on offer is staggering and brings the fight straight to Netflix, a decided underdog in this battle and another sign that Disney is way too big and has too much power when it can just swagger onto the scene and immediately destroy a company that has been built from the ground up to do this one very thing.
But, look! Birds!
And oh, all the birds you’ll see if you decide to subscribe to Disney+. The service intends to boast more than 250 hours of content from NatGeo (That’s National Geographic to you, gramps). This will include television and film programs like Cosmos, Wild Yellowstone, The Dog Whisperer, and even Free Solo (which I assume means the movie will be migrating over from Hulu).
Headlining the bunch will be The World According to Jeff Goldblum, a series in which the actor most known for his role in The Sentinel will gawk at everyday things and seem both perplexed and amazed at all times, as if he’s on some endless MDMA ride that will never let up. So, I’m guessing How Stuff Works but with Jeff Goldblum going “Ooooh” and “Ahhhh” in the background.
For my money, Goldblum’s show doesn’t sound as interesting as the Travel Channel offerings hosted by Robert Endlund or Bruce Campbell. I think I’m probably in the minority, though, with Jeff Goldblum’s charming internet appeal and meme status. Everyone has that one actor that they’ll drop everything and watch whatever he ends up in. I mean, if NatGeo announced Nicolas Cage Freaks Out at Everything, I would buy a subscription without a second thought.
Even as it stands, with a price of $6.99 and my love of zoning out to this sort of nonfiction stuff, I’m certainly down to open my wallet for Disney+–but I’ll still hold out on giving the big mouse more bucks until I see just how Discovery’s streaming service shapes up.
