For the past 20 years Disney has had a first-look option on Jerry Bruckheimer’s films resulting in 27 movies, bajillions of dollars for both companies and a little franchise called Pirates of the Caribbean. Next year that all ends as Disney and Bruckheimer have announced the will be parting ways only to work together again on franchises like National Treasure (that’s still a thing?) and Pirates.
Disney says that this is because Bruckheimer want to “produce more mature films outside the scope of the Disney brand,” which is somewhat believable. However, in this what-have-you-done-for-me-lately industry it can’t help that Bruckheimer’s latest film, The Lone Ranger, was a massive flop this summer with the studio saying they’ll be losing nearly $190 million because of it. Not to worry though, I’m pretty sure both Disney and Bruckheimer are going to OK going forward.
