Jessica Alba is kind of a baby. When you set out to be an actor, there are certain realities you have to face. If you’re grossly overweight, you won’t be playing Wonder Woman. If you look like Danny Devito, you’re going to get cast in roles like the Penguin. If you’re Jessica Alba, you’re going to be asked to be pretty no matter what you’re doing, even playing dead.

Alba tells Elle about how hard it is to be her: “I remember when I was dying in (Fantastic Four: Rise of the) Silver Surfer…the director was like, ‘It looks too real. It looks too painful. Can you be prettier when you cry? Don’t do that thing with your face. Just make it flat. We can CGI the tears in.’ It all got me thinking…'Am I not good enough? Are my instincts and my emotions not good enough? Do people hate them so much that they don’t want me to be a real person?' …And so I just said, ‘F*** it. I don’t’ care about this business anymore.’”
Jess, have you ever heard about the experience Shelley Duvall went through while filming The Shining, a movie with a smidgen more credibility than the movie with an evil cloud as its main bad guy? According to IMDb, Stanley Kubrick was deliberately cruel to Duvall, and to help increase her sense of hopelessness, told the cast and crew not to sympathize with her. He then told her, “It doesn’t help you.” And, of course, there’s the story about the time they filmed a shot over a hundred times and she finally broke down and asked what he wanted from her, to which he purportedly responded with, “I want you to act.”
So it’s rough for you to feel like your emotions ‘aren’t good enough?’ Next time you feel that way, give Shelley Duvall a call.
