This is something of a let down. After the casting of Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Christopher Nolan’s Batman swan song, The Dark Knight Rises, there’s been a lot of rumor as to who they’re both playing. JGL has been attached as The Riddler, Alberto Falcone, and Robin, while Cotillard was basically assumed to be playing Talia al Ghul, daughter of Begins villain Ra’s al Ghul. Sorry to burst the old bubble, but none of these are the case.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing beat cop John Blake, who will be a part of Commissioner Gordon’s special unit, likely tasked with hunted Batman, given the events of The Dark Knight. Marion Cotillard will be playing Miranda Tate, “a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.”
So that’s that. There’s always a chance this is a smokescreen to hide their true roles, but this should also allay some fears that the movie will have villain overload, as we’re now only confirmed to have Bane as a villain, with the possibility that Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman might be a touch villainous. I think that’ s likely, as Cotillard’s role seems to be in line with a love interest-y sort of role.
