For the first time in over two decades, Jim Carrey will be returning to TV as a series regular in the upcoming Showtime series Kidding. It feels like it’s been about as many years since I’ve been excited to see him in something, too.
No, that’s not entirely true. There’s one thing that I’ve very much enjoyed watching Jim Carrey do in the past year, and that’s ramble about what people and things are and the existence of a person as a body versus a created personality and all the sort of stuff we think about the first time we smoke weed. If there’s one thing this man currently has, it’s a crises of identity.
And that crises is going to serve him well in Kidding, a series that follows a beloved children’s show host named Mr. Pickles (not to be confused with the rad Adult Swim character by the same name) who’s a Mr. Rogers-esque beacon of hope and peace, but when his family life starts to crumble, he crumbles with it.
There’s a scene where someone tells Carrey that he’s not a person, he’s just a man in a box. And, yeah, he’s going to knock this one out of the park.
Kidding will also star Catherine Keener and Judy Greer and will air on Sunday, September 9.
