Johnny Depp hints at retirement from acting

0

With Johnny Depp now 50 years old, there's been talk about him possibly retiring. Depp suggested an impending retirement when interviewed by Rolling Stone back in June. He told the magazine, "I can't say that I'd want to be doing this for another 10 years." Depp dropped another hint of retirement over at BBC Breakfast recently:

At a certain point you start thinking and you know when you add up the amount of dialogue you say per year, for example, and you realize that you've said written words more than you've actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as a kind of insane option for a human being. So are there quieter things that I wouldn't mind doing? Yeah, I would not mind that.

The retirement wouldn't be for another couple years since Depp's got projects slated through 2015 and beyond, including Into the Woods, Wally Pfister's Transcendence, another one of those Pirates movies, and Alice in Wonderland 2.

Personally, I don't think he'll necessarily go through with it. This might just be a lingering frustration after the underperformance of a passion project (The Rum Diary), starring in two unfulfilling movies that took a critical drubbing (Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger), and having to do two Disney sequels he's probably not all that interested in. All Depp needs is a smaller project that succeeds -- something substantive made for eight figures instead of something vapid made for nine.
