Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made a gajillion dollars, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone that Disney is is already in the early stages of developing the fifth entry into the franchise. We already reported on the rumors that both the fifth and sixth Pirates films would be filmed back-to-back, and back in May we told you that the first draft of the script had been completed. The last piece of the puzzle was Johnny Depp, who is now reportedly in talks to once again step into the boots of Captain Jack Sparrow.
While never ruling out returning to the series, Depp has expressed interest in taking longer breaks between each movie, which doesn’t seem to really fit with Disney’s vision for the franchise, which is apparently to make as many movies and as much money as possible. Of course, as Empire points out, Depp will be fairly busy for the foreseeable future filming The Lone Ranger, so Disney may not be able to cash in on another Pirates movie for quite some time.
Strangely, I’m not entirely soured on the idea of more Pirates movies, because I loved the first two. I actually liked On Stranger Tides more than I did At World’s End, but I also like being not punched in the face more than I like being punched in the face.
