Johnny Depp has apparently started work with Disney on a modern retelling of Don Quixote, that wonderfully cursed picaresque novel by Miguel de Cervantes. The screenplay for the untitled project is being written by Steve Pink (director of Hot Tub Time Machine) and Jeff Morris (writer of the Black List script The True Memoirs of an International Assassin). Depp will produce the film with Christi Dembrowski.
Depp previously starred in the troubled production of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Terry Gilliam’s take on the character. The film fell apart, which is all chronicled in the unmaking-of documentary Lost in La Mancha. Gilliam is currently working on The Zero Theorum with Christoph Waltz, but has attempted to revive his Don Quixote film on multiple occasions.
Look for more info on this Don Quixote retelling in coming months. The Lone Ranger with Depp, Armie Hammer, and Helena Bonham Carter comes out July 3rd.
